NSUWP is committed to supporting innovative venues for recognition and
publication of student writing. NSUWP, along with other Louisiana Writing
Project sites, sponsors the La Writes! Contest for all Louisiana
students. Students whose writings are selected are recognized at the
annual Louisiana Book Festival in Baton Rouge and NSUWP sends a team of
teacher-consultants each year to support the contest awards ceremony and to
work in the Children’s Writing Tent.
NSUWP also hosts an annual Teacher-Student Writing Marathon open each spring
to all teachers who wish to come write with their students in downtown historic
Natchitoches and its Cane River. The 2010 Writing Marathon included
students and teachers from Natchitoches, Sabine, DeSoto, and Red River Parishes.
Additionally, NSUWP sponsors a Children’s Writing Camp each summer.
Participating students are encouraged to take part in activities that give them
the opportunity to read and write for pleasure. Field studies are
included where students learn to keep an active writing journal which they use for
more developed writings when they return to the camp.
